At Dragon-Tiger Martial Arts we understand that just the mere idea of
martial arts may seem intimidating to some while exciting to others. Our
program is designed to accommodate persons with absolutely no
experience to those who have already earned black belts in other
disciplines.
First of all, one should understand that in martial arts
there are different styles and purpose. Karate is the oriental version
of boxing. This is true in forms such as Kung Fu, Kenpo, Tai Kwon Do and
Muy Tai. The oriental version of wrestling would be styles such as Jui
Jitsu and Judo.
What do we teach? The martial you will be learning
is Long-Hu-Dao Karate. The words are Chinese; Long meaning "dragon," Hu
meaning "tiger," and Dao meaning "path" or "way." The tiger
symbolizes strength, while the dragon symbolizes wisdom. Long-Hu-Dao can
be translated as “The Way of the Dragon and Tiger” or "The Way of
Strength and Wisdom."
Our system is based on several different
martial arts from China, Japan and a bit from Korea. However our core
defensive techniques come from the Chinese martial art of Kenpo, as well
as our strikes, kicks and hand skill. Our katas are based off the
Shotokan martial art from Japan. Both the core techniques and the katas
have been influenced over the years with the Korean martial arts of
Tang-Soo do and Moo duk Kwon. Our system encapsulates bits and pieces
from other styles enhancing the Kenpo and Shotokan core making it a more
dynamic and versatile martial art.
What can I expect in class? In
our dojo we train all levels of skill in each class, although the
classes are divided into age appropriate groups. There is a belt system
consisting of ten ranks from white to black and then a post black
curriculum that is separate. Our students not only learn at their own
pace, but also learn to help others reach their goals. This helps each
student gain knowledge, confidence, responsibility and respect. These
skills, in addition to learning how to strengthen our minds and bodies
through repetitive and challenging moves, is beneficial to men, women
and children. Ultimately, self defense through self improvement.
How
often will I train and for how long? Ultimately, it is recommended that
martial artists train twice per week. Our fees cover that and also allow
those wanting to train more, the option of attending more often at no
extra charge. Our classes are 50 minutes long and will implement the use
of cross-training in various complimentary methods such as meditation,
yoga, strength, cardio, and stretching. This accomplishes a well rounded
body, mind and spirit. Each person’s journey will be different and not
all will wish to achieve a black belt, but, there really is no actual
end to training in karate except by choice or circumstance. Generally,
the average adult can reach black belt in about 4 to 6 years and
children about a year or 2 longer. Then we learn that our black belt is
really just the beginning of our learning all over again.
We are
committed to making all who choose to train with us feel comfortable as
we offer teaching by male and female instructors who understand that
just getting started is the only part that is difficult. You will not
regret trying…seriously, bare feet and loose clothing…how comfortable is
that?
